Death was not always a tragic thing. Indeed, near the beginning, death was part of the cycle of spiritual evolution. But the beings of great evil have always gravitated toward the Realm of the Dead - Lucifer, Satan, Hades, and Seth. This churning of greater beings ended when Leviathan killed Loki's daughter Hel and became Nergal's concubine in the underworld, and ever since then - which, to orient you, has been thousands upon thousands of years - death, for nearly all, truly has been a terrible thing.
And one thing you need know concerning the Death Lord - there is no single figure as powerful as he. Paradoxically, this has helped preserve the world by leading to a delicate balance of power amongst the three Lords of Darkness
